The Idaho Steelheads began in 1997 as a member of the West Coast Hockey League before joining the ECHL in 2003, and now stand as the only remaining WCHL franchise in the league. Now, the team heads into its 24th professional season and 18th as a member of the ECHL.

In their first ECHL season in 2003-04, the Steelheads won their first Kelly Cup Championship over the Florida Everblades, becoming the first team to win an ECHL championship in its first season since the Greensboro Monarchs in 1989-90 (the league’s second season of operation). The Steelheads won their second Kelly Cup Championship in 2007 over the Dayton Bombers and also hosted the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game. The team captured the Brabham Cup as ECHL regular-season champions in 2009-10, on its way to its third appearance in the Kelly Cup Finals, where they fell in five games to Cincinnati.

Over the team’s 23-year history, the Steelheads have retired four players’ numbers, including defenseman Jeremy Mylymok (4), forward Scott Burt (12), all-time leading scorer Marty Flichel (16), and WCHL leading scorer Cal Ingraham (22).

The Steelheads own professional hockey’s longest active playoff streak at 22 seasons, never missing a playoff berth in the WCHL or ECHL. The Steelheads have been the ECHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars since 2005-06 and play their home games at Idaho Central Arena in Boise, Idaho.
