The 2016 Kelly Cup Finals matchup will be set tonight following Game 7 of the Eastern Conference between the Wheeling Nailers and South Carolina Stingrays. Face-off is set for 7:05 p.m. ET at the North Charleston Coliseum and you can catch all of the action LIVE on ECHL.TV.
Wheeling forced the decisive game with a 4-3 overtime win last night, capped by Jarrett Burton's game-winning goal with 1:19 remaining in the first overtime period.
Both teams have experienced a Game 7 already in the 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs. Wheeling defeated Reading in overtime of Game during the Eastern Conference Semifinals while South Carolina eliminated Adirondack with a double overtime win in their Eastern Conference Semifinals series.
Wheeling is 2-2 in four previous Game 7s, with all four being decided in overtime. In addition to the win over Reading in the previous round, the Nailers defeated Greenville in the 2011 Eastern Conference Semifinals while falling to Toledo in the 2015 North Division Semifinals and to Cincinnati in the 2009 North Division Semifinals. The Nailers are seeking to become the first team in ECHL history to win Games 6 and 7 of a series on the road.
South Carolina, which tied an ECHL record by playing in three Game 7s last year, is 4-1 all-time in decisive games. In addition to their win over Adirondack in the conference semifinals, the Stingrays defeated Toledo in the 2015 Eastern Conference Finals,Reading in the 2015 East Division Semifinals and Alaska in the 2009 Kelly Cup Finals, while suffering a loss to Allen in the 2015 Kelly Cup Finals.
Tonight is the 38th Game 7 all-time in ECHL postseason history, and the sixth of the 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs. The home team is 27-10 all-time in ECHL Game 7s (4-1 this year) and has won 13 of the last 15 Game 7s all-time.
