Holmberg joins Thunder

Wichita, Kan. - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators, announced that Head Coach Malcolm Cameron has come to terms with forward Mitch Holmberg for the 2016-17 season.

Holmberg, 23, returns to North America after playing one season for Szekesfehervar II of the MOL Liga in Hungary. A native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Holmberg recorded 68 points (37g-31a) in 48 games as well as 17 points (6g-11a) in nine playoffs games. Holmberg is entering his third season as a pro after signing an amateur try-out with the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League in 2013-14. He played eight games for the Bakersfield Condors during his rookie season in 2014-15 before heading to the Elmira Jackals where he finished with 14 points (6g-8a) in 32 games.

Prior to turning pro, Holmberg had a decorated junior career with the Western Hockey League's Spokane Chiefs. He piled up 296 points (147g-149a) in 314 games and was awarded the Bobby Clarke Trophy as the WHL's leading scorer in 2013-14 with 118 points (62g-56a). He led the league with 62 goals and was one of just three players to score 60 or more goals in a single WHL season since 2000-01.
