Solar Bears, Doherty agree to terms

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Solar Bears, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL's Toronto Marlies, have announced that the club has agreed to terms with veteran defenseman Taylor Doherty for the 2016-17 season.

Doherty, 25, was originally acquired by the Solar Bears during the 2015-16 season on March 9 from the Rapid City Rush, where he had logged 24 points (8g-16a) and 32 penalty minutes in 56 games. That same day, he also signed a Professional Tryout Agreement with the Toronto Marlies, where he spent the remainder of the season, notching three assists and 20 penalty minutes in 12 games.

In 302 career professional games, Doherty has posted 65 points (15g-40a) and 399 penalty minutes.

Prior to turning pro, the Cambridge, Ontario, native spent his major junior career with the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs, where he registered 137 points (38g-99a) and 458 penalty minutes in 263 games. Doherty was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the second round (57th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
