Windsor, Colo. – The Colorado Eagles, proud ECHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, announced that they have re-signed forward Johnny Lazo for the 2016-17 season.
Lazo burst onto the scene as a rookie last season, posting 21 goals and 15 assists in just 34 games with Colorado. Lazo was named the ECHL’s Rookie of the Month in January after scoring nine goals in his first nine games as an Eagle. In addition, his shooting percentage of 21.9% led all ECHL rookies during the 2015-16 season and was good for third overall in the league.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba native joined the Eagles last January after beginning his first season as a professional in the Serie A league in Italy, where he starred for the Sterzing/Vipiteno Broncos, posting 35 points (16g-19a) in 22 games.
Lazo enjoyed a standout career at both the collegiate and major-junior levels. Lazo registered 132 points (55g-77a) in 136 games with the University of Alberta. He was named to the CIS All-Rookie Team in 2011, the CIS All-Star Team in 2013 and helped the Golden Bears capture the CIS National Championship in 2014.
Prior to making the move to the collegiate level, Lazo generated 170 points in 217 WHL contests with the Tri-City Americans. His major-junior career was highlighted by a 2009-10 campaign which saw Lazo score 71 points (39g-32a) in 72 games with the Americans.
