Nailers sign goaltender Doug Carr

WHEELING, W.Va. - The Wheeling Nailers, ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, announced the signing of goaltender Doug Carr to a contract for the 2016-17 season.

Carr, 27, will be entering his third full season of professional hockey, after spending time in both the AHL and ECHL to begin his career. Last year, he spent the majority of the campaign with the Manchester Monarchs, turning in a 10-8-5 record, a 2.77 goals against average, and a .915 save percentage. He was also between the pipes for four of the team's five postseason contests.

One year earlier, the Hanover, Mass. native split his season between the Colorado Eagles and AHL's Adirondack Flames, combining to go 14-13-0. Overall, Carr has played in 18 AHL games to complement his 46 ECHL contests, suiting up with the Abbotsford Heat and Albany Devils, in addition to Adirondack. His time with the Heat came shortly after his NCAA career came to an end, and included one playoff appearance, as he made 13 saves in relief of Joni Ortio against Grand Rapids.

Prior to turning pro, Carr attended UMass-Lowell, where he put together a solid sophomore season, going 22-10-1, with a 2.13 goals-against average, and .928 save percentage, while helping to bring the River Hawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996. The tandem of Carr and Connor Hellebuyck led the River Hawks to the national stage in each of the next two years, including a trip to the Frozen Four at Consol Energy Center in 2013. The netminder completed his collegiate career with a record of 42-33-7 in 86 games.
