NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays, ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have agreed to terms with veteran forward Trevor Gillies, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky announced.
Gillies, 37, has re-signed with South Carolina as he begins his 18th season of professional hockey. The former NHL forward served as an alternate captain for the Stingrays during the 2015-16 season and quickly became a fan favorite. He skated in 46 games for South Carolina, racking up 107 penalty minutes and adding two assists. Never afraid to stand up for his teammates, Gillies also skated in all 19 playoffs games for the Stingrays, collecting 25 penalty minutes and one assist.
The Cambridge, Ontario native has played over 700 games in the NHL, AHL and ECHL, accumulating over 3,000 penalty minutes. He has appeared in 57 career NHL games, collecting 261 penalty minutes. After making his NHL debut with Anaheim during the 2005-06 season, Gillies spent parts of three years with the New York Islanders from 2009-12. As a member of the Islanders during the 2010-11 season, Gillies skated in 39 games, scoring two goals and adding 165 penalty minutes.
