Admirals seek second-half surge after successful January

A three-game sweep over North Division leading Manchester last week allowed the Norfolk Admirals to improve to 9-2-0 during the month of January, giving the team three more wins in a month than they had during the first three months of the 2016-17 season.

The Admirals’ offense has also seen a resurgence over the last month, scoring at least three goals in 10 of their 112games in January.

Norfolk opened the three-game series against Manchester with a third-period comeback in a 4-3 overtime win on Wednesday. The Admirals scored a pair of goals a little over a minute apart in the closing five minutes of regulation to tie the score and Gabriel Verpaelst notched the game-winning tally 2:27 into the extra session. Brandon Anderson, who earlier in the month posted the second-longest personal shutout streak in ECHL history at 269:36, picked up the win in goal with 29 saves.

Friday once again saw Norfolk stage a third-period rally on its way to a 6-5 shootout win. Trailing 5-1 entering the final period, the Admirals tallied four goals, including the tying goal from Brodie Dupont with 1:59 remaining, to send the game to overtime. Zach Pochiro, who recorded four assists in regulation, and T.J. Foster tallied for the Admirals in the shootout while Anderson stopped two of the three Monarchs’ shots to preserve the win.

The final game of the series on Saturday also went to overtime, with the Admirals coming way with a 4-3 shootout win. Ben Murphy (1g-1a) and Alex Pompeo (2a) each had multi-point games in the win for Norfolk while Steven Summerhays stopped 38 Manchester shots to earn the win in goal.

Dupont leads Norfolk on the season with 29 points (11g-18a) in 29 games while John Dunbar has posted a team-leading 12 goals. Foster has been a key addition as well tallying 21 points (9g-12a) in 21 contests with the Admirals.

Anderson has tallied four shutouts in 14 appearances with Norfolk to rank fourth in the league to go along with his 10-3-0 record.

Norfolk faces off against Adirondack three times this week, hosting the Thunder on Wednesday before hitting the road for games on Friday and Saturday.
