Register lifts Eagles to Game 1 win in double overtime

Matt Register's power-play goal 10:52 into the second overtime lifted the Colorado Eagles to a 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays in Game 1 of the Kelly Cup Finals on Friday at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colo.

It was the fourth-longest Riley/Kelly Cup Finals game in ECHL postseason history and just the 12th Finals game to be decided in multiple overtimes.

Colorado's Matt Garbowsky scored the only goal of the opening period, putting the rebound of his initial shot past South Carolina goaltender Parker Milner at the 16:11 mark. Julien Nantel and Teigan Zahn earned the assists on Garbowsky's third goal of the 2017 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Scott Tanski pulled the Stingrays even 10:14 into the second period when he deflected Marcus Perrier's shot from the left point past Eagles' goaltender Lukas Hafner.

With 2:33 remaining in regulation, Steven McParland gave South Carolina its first lead of the night as he took a pass from Derek Arnold on the left post and beat Hafner for his fifth goal of the playoffs.

But, with 2.5 seconds remaining in the third period, Garbowsky forced overtime with his second goal of the game. Garbowsky picked up a loose puck in the right-wing circle and beat Milner with a shot to the stick side.

With the win, Colorado improves to 5-0 in overtime during the 2017 Kelly Cup Playoffs. The five overtime wins is tied with seven other teams for the most in a single postseason in ECHL history.
