The Victoria, British Columbia native made his college debut for the University of North Dakota and played two seasons (2013-14 and 2014-15), before transferring to Arizona State, where he finished with 20 points (9g-11a) and 30 penalty minutes in 31 games as a senior.

Before college, the 23-year-old spent four seasons playing in the British Columbia Hockey League for the Victoria Grizzlies and Penticton Vees where he had 181 points (69g-112a) in 172 games. Murphy served as alternate captain in his last season with the Vees, and recorded 11 points (5g-6a) and 12 penalty minutes in 15 playoff games.
