Boise, Idaho – Idaho Steelheads Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Neil Graham announced that the team has completed a trade with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, acquiring forward Tommy Thompson in exchange for the rights to forward Joe Basaraba. Thompson has signed a contract with the Steelheads for the 2017-18 season.
The Steelheads are the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars and the American Hockey League's Texas Stars.
Thompson finished his rookie season with the Swamp Rabbits in 2016-17 with 33 points (16g-17a) in 58 games, while also appearing in all six playoff games for Greenville. The Londonderry, N.H. native also played in three games in the American Hockey League with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Thompson’s 16 goals were tied for sixth-most on the team last year, and his 33 points ranked third among Greenville rookies.
The 26-year-old did some of his best work late in games. His five game-winning goals led the Swamp Rabbits last season, while his four overtime tallies led the league. Thompson had six multi-point games last season and had his best offensive stretch from Jan. 15-Feb. 1. Thompson enjoyed a seven-game points streak during that stretch, totaling six goals and 11 points to go along with two three-point performances.
Thompson also played eight games with Greenville and scored two goals following his senior season at St. Lawrence University in 2016. In 69 career professional games, Thompson has 35 points (18g-16a) and 36 penalty minutes.
Prior to turning pro, Thompson played four seasons at St. Lawrence, serving as an alternate captain in his senior season. In 141 college games, Thompson had 57 points (26g-31a).
