Pearce named ECHL Manager of Officiating

The ECHL on Wednesday announced that it has hired Mike Pearce as Manager of Officiating. He will begin his new role immediately.

“This is a much-deserved opportunity for Mike as he has been a key part to our officiating staff for many years,” said ECHL Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Ernst. “Mike’s knowledge of the ECHL and our officiating staff, along with a tireless work ethic, will be a good asset to the officiating staff in making each official the best they can be.”

Pearce will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the League’s Officiating Department including oversight of on-ice officials, administration of rules and directives, travel and administration of officials, communications with the National Hockey League and American Hockey League on ECHL officials and the ECHL Rule Book.

The 2017-18 season will be Pearce’s 20th season of involvement with the ECHL. For the previous nine seasons, he served as a supervisor and officiating development coach. Prior to that, he spent ten seasons as an on-ice official in the ECHL, American Hockey League, International Hockey League and West Coast Hockey League. Pearce was a referee for over 600 professional games while working over 300 games as a linesman.

Pearce was selected to work the Kelly Cup Finals in 1998 and the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game in Boise. He also served as a referee for the 1997 USA Junior A National Championship game in Springfield, Missouri and worked the WCHL’s Taylor Cup Finals in 2003.

Began in 1988-89 with five teams in four states, the ECHL has grown into a coast-to-coast league with 27 teams in 21 states and one Canadian province as it celebrates its 30th season in 2017-18. There have been who have played in the NHL after playing in the ECHL, including 24 who made their debut in the 2016-17 season. The ECHL has affiliations with 27 of the 30 NHL teams in 2017-18, marking the 21st consecutive season that the league had affiliations with at least 20 teams in the NHL.
