Stingrays sign rookie forward Cammarata

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and AHL’s Hershey Bears, have agreed to terms with forward Taylor Cammarata for the 2017-18 season.

A third-round selection (76th overall) of the New York Islanders in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Cammarata will begin his professional career in South Carolina after completing a four-year collegiate career at the University of Minnesota.

Cammarata, 22, played 149 career games with the Golden Gophers from 2013-17 and collected 93 points (25g-68a). The Plymouth, Minn. native was a member of four consecutive Big Ten regular-season championships, as well as a Big Ten Tournament title in 2015.

Before enrolling at Minnesota, Cammarata excelled in junior hockey with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League. He racked up 162 points in 119 games, including a 93-point season during 2012-13 that won him multiple awards including the league’s Player of the Year. Cammarata’s point and goal (38) totals were the most in the USHL that season, and earned him USA Hockey’s Junior Hockey Player of the Year award and a selection to the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.
