Monarchs continue road success with three-game sweep

The Manchester Monarchs continued their five-game road trip last week with a three-game sweep at Utah to improve to 8-2-2 on the road this season and move into a tie with Wheeling for first place of the North Division with an overall mark of 11-7-2 for 24 points. Manchester’s eight road wins are tied for second in the league.

The Monarchs opened the three-game set with a 2-1 shootout win on Wednesday. Sam Kurker scored Manchester’s lone goal in regulation while Spencer Watson scored the only goal in the shootout. Charles Williams turned aside 24 of the 25 shots he faced, plus all three shootout attempts, to record the win in net.

On Friday, Manchester broke a 3-3 tie after two periods with a five-goal third period on its way to an 8-3 victory. Zac Lynch (2g-1a), Kevin Morris (1g-2a) and Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman (3a) all had three-point nights in the win and Evan Cowley made 39 saves to get the win.

The Monarchs concluded the sweep with a 4-1 win on Saturday. Four different players tallied goals in the win with Williams earning his second win of the week with 36 saves, including stops on Utah’s final 21 shots of the night.

Joel Lowry leads Manchester with 19 points (8g-11a) and is tied with Morris for the team lead in goals. Colton Saucerman is tied for fifth among defensemen with 14 points (3g-11a) and his nine power-play points (2g-7a) are tied for second among blue liners.

Williams’ seven wins are tied for fourth in the league while he ranks second with a .932 save percentage and third with a 2.15 goals-against average.

The Monarchs wrap up their road trip on Saturday at Worcester.
