Rookie Round-Up: Spencer Dorowicz, Cincinnati Cyclones

The Rookie Round-Up gives ECHL fans the chance to get to know a rookie who has signed with an ECHL team for the 2018-19 season.  This week, the ECHL spoke with Spencer Dorowicz of the Cincinnati Cyclones. After finishing his collegaite career with Robert Morris University, he’s ready to get started on the next chapter – get to know him in this Q&A!

2017-18 Teams: Robert Morris University (41 gp, 8g, 11a, 19 pts.) and Greenville Swamp Rabbits (8 gp, 1g, 0a, 1 pts.)

ECHL: What should Cyclones fans know about you?

Spencer Dorowicz: I’m from Olds, Alberta, where I grew up and played junior hockey. I just finished my finance degree at Robert Morris University this year where I played four years out of Pittsburgh. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family, golfing and watching a good comedy every now and again.

ECHL: You had the chance to play in eight games with Greenville at the end of last season. Did that experience help you in knowing what to expect entering your first season of pro hockey?

SD: Definitely, I had a great experience in Greenville. I have an idea of what to expect now because of that opportunity, and I think that really helps me moving into the new season.

ECHL: What's one thing that ECHL and Cincinnati fans might be surprised to learn about you?

SD: They may be surprised to learn that I pursued golf competitively up until I was 17. I earned a spot on a junior golf team representing Canada over in Scotland when I was 15, and had the opportunity to play historic courses such as St. Andrews and Carnoustie. 

ECHL: Are there any NHL players you try to model your game after?

SD: I try to model my game after Patrice Bergeron. He’s a great two-way forward and centerman who always takes care of the defensive end first, shutting down the oppositions top players all while still creating scoring chances and having great offensive ability. 

ECHL: What has been the most memorable moment or moments of your hockey career so far?

SD: Winning multiple Three Rivers Classic championships and regular-season championships during my four years with Robert Morris University. One of my best years of hockey was my last year of junior with the Olds Grizzlys of the AJHL, earning a scholarship that season. My most recent memorable moment would be scoring my first ECHL goal in my first game with Greenville.

ECHL: How have you been spending your summer?

SD: I’ve spent my summer in the gym training for the season, working pouring concrete, weekends at the lake, golf, and hanging out with friends and family.

ECHL: What are you most looking forward to about your first season in pro hockey?

SD: I’m most looking forward to the learning aspect of my first pro season, and developing my game as much as possible.
