Steelheads surge to brink of division lead

No team in the ECHL has fashioned a better record since Dec. 11 than the Idaho Steelheads. Idaho has posted an 18-5-1 record since that date and has moved from fifth place in the West Division and eight points behind first-place to Utah to second place and just one point behind the Grizzlies. Last week, the Steelheads took two of three games from West Division rival Alaska. After suffering a 6-1 loss in the first game of the series on Wednesday, Idaho rebounded with a 2-1 victory on Friday. Jake Fallon scored both of the Steelheads’ goals while Jack Campbell stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced to pick up the win in goal. On Saturday, Idaho rallied from an early 2-1 deficit to score the final four goals of the game en route to a 5-2 win over the Aces. Radoslav Illo, who was acquired in a trade with Norfolk on Friday, notched a pair of goals in his Steelheads’ debut, while Jake Rutt scored his first career goal in his 46th career game and added a pair of assists. Three other Steelheads – Corbin Baldwin, Andre Bouvet-Morrissette and Torin Snydeman – recorded multi-point games and Campbell made 39 saves to earn the win. A pair of Steelheads rank among the league scoring leaders. Rob Linsmayer is tied for 11th with 41 points (12g-29a) and Emil Molin is tied for 17th with 38 points (19g-19a). Molin is also tied for sixth in the league with 19 goals. Jefferson Dahl is tied for the league lead with nine power-play goals while Zach Yuen leads defensemen, and is tied for third overall in the league, with 17 power-play points (3g-14a). Campbell qualified for the league goaltending leader board over the weekend, and sits atop the ECHL with a 1.73 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage while posting an 11-4-0 record in 15 games. His three shutouts are tied for second in the league. The Steelheads face Utah in a home-and-home series this weekend, hosting the Grizzlies on Friday before heading to West Valley City on Saturday.
