The ECHL Board of Governors recently completed its Mid-Season Meeting. The following items were approved by the Board of Governors. Evansville IceMen MembershipThe Board of Governors approved a Transfer of Home Territory for the Evansville IceMen Membership from Evansville, Indiana to Owensboro, Kentucky. The Board also approved the IceMen Membership’s request for a Voluntary Suspension for the 2016-17 season, to allow time for the necessary renovations of the Owensboro Sportscenter to be completed. New awardsThe Board of Governors approved awarding the Best Ice Award to the team with judged to have the best ice in both the Eastern and Western Conference, as well as the introduction of the General Manager of the Year Award. Both awards will be awarded for the first time following the 2015-16 season.
About the ECHLBegan in 1988-89 with five teams in four states, the ECHL has grown into a coast-to-coast league with 28 teams in 21 states and one Canadian province for its 28th season in 2015-16. There have been who have started their career in the ECHL who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League, including 23 who have made their NHL debuts in the 2015-16 season. The ECHL has affiliations with 25 of the 30 NHL teams in 2015-16, marking the 19th consecutive season that the league had affiliations with at least 20 teams in the NHL.
