2015-16 CCM ECHL Goaltender of the Week Q&AJoel Martin – March 28-April 3
ECHL: Congratulations on winning the CCM/ECHL Goaltender of the Week! This is the eighth time in your career that you have won this award- a new ECHL record! What does it mean to you to have won this award a record number of times? Joel Martin: To me it means I've been blessed to play for a long period of time. It also means I've been a part of some good teams with some great teammates. You can't win personal awards without being surrounded by great people. I'd like to thank all my teammates and coaches that have helped me along the way. ECHL: Speaking of records, your win on Saturday was the 156th of your ECHL career – which moved you into fifth place in league history. To what to you credit your longstanding success in the ECHL? JM: Again I need to give credit to my teammates here. Also the many goalie coaches who have molded my game. Manny Legace and A.J. Walczak at the "Legace hockey academy." Also Mike Bergren, John Stevenson and Tom Askey to name a few. I've learned so much from all of you. Thank you! ECHL: You’re a veteran in the ECHL and in the Wings locker room – what do you try to stress the most to the young guys just starting out in the League? JM: I think we have a lot of leadership in our locker room so I try not to say too much. I try to lead by example by focusing on my job and trying to get better everyday. ECHL: You’ve played in the ECHL for parts of several seasons – your first experience being in Columbus in 2003-04. What would you say is the biggest change about the ECHL from your first season in the League , to now?JM: The landscape of the league has changed so much. Teams have gone and new teams have come into the league. It's neat to see the evolution of the league. I think the hockey is better then it's ever been. ECHL: Looking back on your career to this point, what has been your proudest ‘hockey moment’ so far? JM: Winning a championship with Kalamazoo back in 2006. It's crazy to think that was 10 years ago. Time flies, I think we're due for another!
