The National Hockey League's Calgary Flames on Friday hired former Las Vegas Wranglers' head coach Glen Gulutzan as the team's new head coach.Gulutzan began his coaching career in the ECHL with the Las Vegas Wranglers in 2003-04, and went on to lead the team for six seasons. Overall with Las Vegas, he went 207-11-43 and was named ECHL Coach of the Year in 2005-06 after leading the Wranglrs to a 53-13-6 record for 112 points, the fifth-highest points total in ECHL history. Las Vegas' 53 wins that season ranks third all-time in league history. Gulutzan led the Wranglers to the Kelly Cup Playoffs in five of his six seasons with the team, including a berth in the Kelly Cup Finals in 2008. Three times in his six seasons, Gulutzan was selected to coach in the ECHL All-Star Game (2006, 2007 and 2008). Following the 2008-09 season, Gulutzan was hired as the first head coach of the American Hockey League's Texas Stars. He led Texas to the Calder Cup Finals in his first season behind the bench and posted an overall record of 87-56-17 in two seasons with Texas.Gulutzan was named head coach of the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars prior to the 2011-12 season, and in two seasons with Dallas went 64-57-9. He has served as an assistant coach with Vancouver Canucks for the previous three seasons.Gulutzan is the fifth active NHL head coach to have ECHL ties joining Buffalo's Dan Bylsma, Minnesota's Bruce Boudreau, Nashville's Peter Laviolette and the New York Islanders' Jack Capuano.
