Chen, MacDonald join Stingrays

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and AHL’s Hershey Bears, have agreed to terms with defenseman Mike Chen and forward Cam MacDonald for the 2018-19 season.

Chen returns to the Stingrays for his second professional year after earning a call-up with the team in February and appearing in 11 games. The blueliner accounted for four points (2g-2a) along with seven penalty minutes during his time with South Carolina.

The 25-year-old began his season with the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League, playing in 46 games with 29 points on (6g-23a)

A native of Rockville, Maryland, Chen played collegiately at Salem State College for three seasons from 2014-17, scoring 29 points (11g-18a) while suiting up for 70 games. He also spent one year at Concordia University during the 2013-14 season, playing in 17 games while tallying three assists.

MacDonald will begin his professional career with the Stingrays in the fall after completing four years at Colby College where he posted 77 points (33g-44a) in a total of 103 games.

As a senior in 2017-18, MacDonald suited up for 30 games and scored 26 points while leading the team with 16 goals. The 22-year-old is a native of Westford, Mass. and is the son of Mules’ head coach Blaise MacDonald, who has been behind the bench at Colby for the past six seasons.
