St. John’s, Newfoundland – The Newfoundland Growlers have signed the defenseman Kristians Rubins to a contract for the 2018-19 season.
The Growlers are the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs and the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies.
The Riga, Latvia native appeared in 126 games over the past two seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League, registering 62 points (11g-51a) along with a +35 rating and 60 penalty minutes.
Rubins, 20, has represented Latvia on the international stage on numerous occasions. During the 2017 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship he appeared in six games, while during the 2018 IIHF World Championship in Denmark he recorded two points (1g-1a) in eight games.
As an 18-year-old, the Winnipeg Jets invited him to their rookie camp after he spent two seasons with Vasteras-IK of Sweden’s second-tier league.
