Mavericks sign defensemen Brooks, Widman

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Defensemen Alex Brooks and Nate Widman have signed to play with the Kansas City Mavericks for the 2017-18 season. 

The Mavericks are the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames and the American Hockey League's Stockton Heat.

Brooks, 26, played 14 games with the Mavericks last season after being acquired via trade with the South Carolina Stingrays. In his short tenure in Kansas City, Brooks recorded eight points (2g-6a). He claimed season totals of 20 points (3g-17a) and a +4 rating in 47 games between the Mavericks and Stingrays in 2016-17.

The native of Walker, Mich. played his first ECHL season in 2016-17 after South Carolina acquired him from the Fayetteville FireAntz of the SPHL. In collegiate action, Brooks competed for the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, where he garnered two Division III NCAA All-Tournament Team honors as well as being named a CCM First Team All-American during his senior season. He capped his collegiate career by netting the game-winning-goal in the national championship game against St. Norbert. 

 Widman, 24, is set to enter his first full season of professional hockey in 2017-18 after skating in four games for with the Rapid City Rush last year. He joined the ECHL after completing the final season of his collegiate career with St. Cloud State, where he was an alternate captain for the last two of three seasons with the Huskies. He spent his freshman year at Brown. 

The native of Naperville, Ill. totaled 19 points (3g-16a) in three seasons with the Huskies and finished with a +23 rating. During his junior season, Widman received the 2016 NCHC Scholar-Athlete Award and was named to the 2016 All-NCHC Academic Team. He also earned CoSIDA All-District Academic Team recognition following his senior season, completing his collegiate career with a 4.0 GPA in both is undergraduate and graduate school education. Widman spent three seasons in the USHL, splitting time between the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Omaha Lancers.
