Wichita, Kan. - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers and AHL's Bakersfield Condors, announced the signing of forward Istvan Sofron.
Sofron has played exclusively overseas in the Austrian League and DEL. A native of Miercurea Ciuc, Romania, the 29-year-old has racked up 213 points (107g-106a) and 458 penalty minutes in 357 games in the EBEL (Austrian League) and 51 points (20g-31a) in 122 games in the DEL. Last season, he played for the Szekeshfehervar Alba Volan HC collecting 30 points (15g-15a) and 85 penalty minutes in 49 games.
He has represented Team Hungary for nine consecutive seasons, including competing in the World Championships. Sofron won silver three times and bronze twice. He was also named the Best Forward and Most Goals in 2010-11, recording 17 points (10g-7a) in 13 International games. In 2015-16, he was named as a World Championship Top 3 Player on Team. Most recently, he scored Hungary's lone marker against the United States last May in a 5-1 loss.
