Reading, Pa. – The Reading Royals have agreed to terms on a contract with Warrington, Pennsylvania native Adam Schmidt, the first player to sign with Reading for the 2018-19 season.
The Royals are the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyers and the American Hockey League's Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Schmidt is back for his second season with the Royals after ranking fifth on the squad in goals (17) and points (44) over 58 games last season. The 27-year-old also topped Reading with three short-handed goals and received the team’s “Heart Award” in part for his role on the penalty kill.
Schmidt is entering his fifth professional season and second in North America; prior to skating for Reading, he competed in Sweden’s Allsvenskan league for a pair of clubs and combined to score 82 points (46g-36a) in 151 games. In 2015-16, Schmidt tied for HC Vita Hästen’s team lead with 19 goals.
The College of the Holy Cross graduate began his professional career in 2013-14 with the AHL's Worcester Sharks, netting three points (1g-2a) in 14 games before heading to Sweden.
At Holy Cross, Schmidt reached double digits in goals his final three seasons. He topped the Crusaders in goals and points as a sophomore and senior. Schmidt was named alternate captain his senior season and registered 29 points (14g-15a).
