ESTERO, Fla. – Florida Everblades President & General Manager Craig Brush along with Head Coach Brad Ralph announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Derek Sheppard and forward Trevor Petersen for the 2018-19 season.
The Everblades are the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes and the American Hockey League's Charlotte Checkers.
Sheppard will return to the Everblades where he totaled seven points (4g-3a) in 10 appearances last season. In addition, Sheppard appeared in 17 postseason games logging an assist with 45 penalty minutes. Sheppard joined the Everblades this past spring after posting 19 points (4g-15a) in 28 games during his senior campaign at York University .
The 24-year-old collected 100 points (33g-67a) in 111 career games during his four-year career at York. While with the Lions, Sheppard was a two-time OUA West defenseman of the year and was named the OUA West most valuable player for the 2016-17 season. The Scarborough, Ontario native also competed in two seasons with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Gatineau Olympiques totaling 23 points (15g-8a) along with 212 penalty minutes in 82 games.
Petersen joins the Everblades after leading York University in scoring last season with 21 points (8g-13a) in 28 games during his senior season. The 23-year-old winger totaled 95 points (41g-54a) in 107 career games during his four collegiate seasons with the Lions (2014-2018). The Markham, Ontario native recorded 17 points (8g-9a) in 103 appearances with the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League from 2011-13.
