Reading, Pa. – Defenseman Garret Cockerill has come to terms on a contract with the Reading Royals for the 2019-20 season.
The Royals are the ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League.
Cockerill joined the Royals in January last season and provided five points (1g-4a) and 26 penalty minutes in 18 games. He completed the final two months of the season with Cleveland of the AHL and played in the first six Calder Cup Playoff games, helping the Monsters advance to the North Division Finals. In the AHL’s regular season, he supplied five assists and a +2 rating in 16 Monsters games.
Before the Royals acquired Cockerill from Jacksonville in January, the Brighton, Michiagn native scored 14 points (4g-10a) in 40 games for the Icemen.In 2017-18, Cockerill played in 13 games with Northeastern University , then signed an ECHL deal with Kalamazoo in December. Cockerill scored six points (1g-5a) in eight games with Kalamazoo before he was loaned to Cleveland, where he added 14 points (3g-11a) and 32 penalty minutes in 40 games.At Northeastern from 2014-17, Cockerill bagged 84 points (19g-65a) in 122 games. He led Northeastern’s defensemen in points as a sophomore (22) and junior (33).
