Meurs joins Nailers for fourth pro season

WHEELING, W.Va. - The Wheeling Nailers, ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, announced the team has signed forward Garrett Meurs for the 2016-17 season.

Meurs is entering his fourth professional season, after playing his first three years in the Colorado Avalanche organization with the Fort Wayne Komets, Lake Erie Monsters and San Antonio Rampage. He was selected by the Avalanche in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, following his second season of junior hockey.

The Wingham, Ontario native made his AHL debut in 2013-14 with the Monsters, spending the entire campaign with the club, collecting 14 points in 64 games. The following year, Meurs played 20 games with Lake Erie, while also getting his first experience at the ECHL level. He was a key member of Fort Wayne's run to the second round of the playoffs, posting 22 points (12g-10a) in 30 regular-season contests, before tacking on six points in ten postseason clashes. Last season, Meurs spent the majority of the season with the Komets, racking up 35 points (18g-17a) in 51 games.

Prior to turning pro, Meurs played four years of junior hockey with the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers. He was a very reliable player for the Whalers, as he missed just seven regular-season games during that time. The forward saw his point total rise in each of the four seasons, as he compiled 34 as a rookie, 40 in his second season, 53 in year three and a team-leading 65 in his final campaign, including a career-high 32 goals. Plymouth won at least one playoff series in all four years with Meurs on the roster.
