Two of his five goals were game-winning goals. Penner was named to the ECAC All-Academic team in each of his four seasons at Colgate.

Before his tenure at Colgate, the 25-year-old played three seasons with the Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He notched 58 points (23g-35a) in his final season while serving as an alternate captain in 2014-15 and captain in 2015-16. Penner was also named to the MJHL Second All-Star Team in both seasons.
