ECHL Top Goaltenders of 2015-16 - Where Are They Now?

As you continue to prepare yourself for the 2016-17 ECHL season, take a look back to some of the best ECHL goaltenders from last season & see where they are now!

TOP GOALTENDERS – GOALS AGAINST

There was no shortage of goaltender talent last season in the ECHL and the goaltenders with the best goals-against average were certainly testament to that.

With his league-leading 1.88 GAA, Josh Robinson of the Missouri Mavericks earned himself Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Year accolades, as well as a spot on the All-ECHL First Team for the 2015-16 Season. Robinson posted a 21-game winning streak from November 4, 2015 through February 14, 2016, setting a new league record for the longest winning streak by a goaltender. To the delight of Mavericks fans, Robinson has signed with the team again for the 2016-17 Season.

Vitek Vanecek had an impressive 2015-16 season, his first professional hockey season in North America. In 32 games with the South Carolina Stingrays he posted a 2.03 GAA. Ready to embark on his second season in professional hockey, Vanecek is currently in training camp with the Hershey Bears (AHL).

In his second professional hockey season, Martin Ouellette earned a 2.10 GAA with the Reading Royals. Prior to his professional career, Ouellette played for four seasons at the University of Maine. The third-year pro signed an AHL contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms earlier this summer, and is currently in training camp with the Reading Royals ahead of the 2016-17 season.

TOP GOALTENDERS - SAVE PERCENTAGE

The impressive goaltending didn’t stop at just three tendys, with more of the ECHL goalie talent highlighted by the best save percentages throughout the League last season.

Josh Robinson of the Missouri Mavericks had the lowest goals against average (1.88) and the best save percentage for the ECHL last year with .931. As previously highlighted – his success last season earned him a spot on the All-ECHL First Team, and he has re-signed with Missouri for the 2016-17 season.

Mark Dekanich played 2 games in the ECHL in the 2009-10, followed by several seasons in the AHL and overseas before returning to ECHL action for 2015-16.  In 35 games with the South Carolina Stingrays last season, he earned a .925 save percentage. The Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL) signed him to an AHL contract over the summer, and he is currently in training camp with the Reading Royals preparing for the 2016-17 season.

Spending the last two seasons with the Toledo Walleye, Jeff Lerg quickly became a fan favorite.   He, like Dekanich, earned a .925 save percentage for the 2015-16 season. While the numbers alone point to his success, Lerg also enjoyed some attention from ESPN last season for a sprawling ‘Top 10’ worthy save.  The Walleye faithful were heartbroken over the summer to see their beloved Lergy sign with Rungsted HC of Denmark for the 2016-17 Season.

Rounding out the goaltenders with top save percentages is Parker Milner, who in 26 games with the Missouri Mavericks last season also had a .925 Save Percentage. Milner enters his fourth professional season in 2016-17, having split time in the ECHL and AHL the past three seasons. He signed with the Hershey Bears in July, and is currently in camp with the South Carolina Stingrays to start the season.
